Building a Better Story—Craft, Book Reviews and Inspiration for the Writer was started at the behest of my Napa Valley creative writing workshop participants as a place to collect my topical “e-lectures” on craft. I started sending out my lectures by e-mail in order to devote more of our class time to revision “workshopping” and discovered students forwarded them to other writers. This blog is my way of expanding our circle of writing friends.

If you’ve found Building a Better Story, no doubt you’re interested in getting started in writing or improving the writing you already do. My hope is that you’ll find inspiration in the information, writing prompts, and resources posted here. No matter what you write, fiction, personal narrative, poetry or non-fiction, you’ll find good advice, helpful ideas, experts’ opinions, and comments by other writers to help you achieve excellence in your craft.

I’m Ana Manwaring, M.A. Besides writing a column for the Petaluma Post for six+ years, thrillers set in Mexico and poetry, I teach Creative and Autobiographical Writing in the Napa Valley and Sonoma County. I also lead “revisioning” workshops for long fiction and creative non-fiction as well as helping writers start critique groups. I founded the Redwood Salon, a bi-monthly literary evening hosted by the Redwood Branch of the California Writers Club and the annual anthology launch event. I coordinated the readings and ran the Club’s Redwood Reading Circle stage at the September Sonoma County Book Festival until it closed. More recently I became the treasurer for Sisters in Crime Norcal. My work has been published in many anthologies as well as on line, on the radio, and in newspapers. I work with authors to develop their manuscripts through my editing firm:  JAM Manuscript Consulting.

Helping writers reach their potential is my goal. Welcome to Building a Better Story!

Hello, my name is Bergen. I just happened upon your blog & found a lot of very useful information. It is very interesting & i am excited to continue reading & learning. I have also been searching around the site for a contact email address for Amber. I read about her experience in helping people write their own personal history & was intrigued. Is there an email address by any chance that is available to contact her?? Any information you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help & have a great day!!
